Ministry of Education
In our school division, we attempt to follow the Blueprints for Life Framework, which is fully supported by Ministry of Education and the Western Canada Protocol, and our Faith Education curricula. Both of these sources offer a great deal of support for Career Development and the building of skills that will allow students to make good choices in the future and be prepared for change.
In Holy Rosary High School, Career Education begins upon entrance into grade 8 and continues throughout grade 12. Most of the formal education occurs in our STAR (Student Teacher Advisory Program), but there are many opportunites to learn and practice new skills in various courses, including the Practical and Applied Arts and core classes like English Language Arts.
Kindergarten
We offer full-day English and French Immersion kindergarten programs. Each program is parallel focusing on the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of your child. Your child will be exposed to a multitude of activities that promote individual growth and development.
We see Kindergarten as a key phase in your child's development. Therefore, we encourage you and your child to visit our Kindergarten programs and tour our schools prior to your child beginning school. Children who are five (5) years of age as of December 31 of the current school year shall be admitted to Kindergarten.
Ministry of Education
The core curriculum in our elementary schools is based upon the curriculum requirements of Ministry of Education and includes Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Arts Education, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education and Religion. Strong Band, Computer and French Language programs complement these core courses. All elementary schools offer extensive extra-curricular programming that provides opportunities for all students in all interest areas.
Modified Academic Courses
Students in Grade 10, 11 and 12 can enroll in Modified Courses in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. These courses follow Ministry of Education's guidelines for courses leveled as 11, 21, 31 and count towards meeting graduation requirements.
High School Alternate Education Program The Alternative Education Program is designed to provide students with a life skills based program. The Saskatchewan Alternative Education Curriculum Guidelines are followed, and upon completion, students receive a Certificate from Ministry of Education.
Language Instruction
Our school division offers French Immersion programming from K-12. Ecole St. Thomas Elementary is a single-track French Immersion school. When students complete grade 7 at Ecole St. Thomas Elementary, they move to Holy Rosary High School, a dual-track French Immersion/English High School. It is highly recommended that students begin their French Immersion journey in kindergarten or grade 1, but there are programs in place to allow students to gain late-entry into French Immersion.
Holy Rosary High School, St. Mary's Elementary School, St. Joseph Elementary School and Father Gorman Community School all offer French programming. Intensive French is also offered in grades 8 - 12 at Holy Rosary High School.
St. Joseph Elementary School, St. Mary's Elementary School and Father Gorman Community School offer an Intensive French program to students in grade 6, where students take the majority of their courses in French for the first half of the year and receive follow-up in the following semester and future years.
Father Gorman Community School and Holy Rosary High School both offer Cree courses that are becoming increasingly popular.
English as a Second Language
ESL programming provides support to ESL learners by providing opportunities to learn English in both the regular classroom as well as small group settings. Program assistance is offered to ensure that the students are finding success in the class programming. Elementary students attend St. Mary's Elementary School for a period of time that allows the students to become proficient in the English language. As this occurs, a transition to the student's home school is facilitated to ensure success continues for the student.
Reading Intervention
Literacy development is essential for the success of students. Lloydminster Catholic School Division has implemented a process to assist students with reaching their potential around literacy. Each Kindergarten through Grade Three student will receive a reading screen on three separate occasions. The purpose is to ensure our students are developing their reading skills at an appropriate level. Assistance is provided for students who are showing signs of a delay in their reading development. This consists of an intervention plan that would see the student work on specific skills (determined by the screen) for a short period of time with a reading intervention teacher. Upon meeting the goals, an additional screen will be given to the student to ensure that the learned skills are intact and transferred to the classroom.
Catholic Youth Leadership Program
The Catholic Youth Leadership Program focuses on healthy alternatives and options for youth. Students provide music ministry and encourage audiences to make positive changes in their schools. This tour begins with our elementary schools and high school and then travels to locations throughout Central Saskatchewan and Alberta. The workshops are fast-paced and interactive and designed to leave the audiences with key messages that are both positive and achievable. The Catholic Youth Leadership Tour begins in November of each year and shows continue until April.
Religious Education
Catholicity is pervasive in every aspect of Lloydminster Catholic Schools. Our formal religion program is compulsory in each grade. Utilizing the Born of the Spirit Program, teachers strive to provide students with an understanding of scripture as well as implementing the Gospel Values in everyday life through the building of a service orientation within the students.
Sacramental Preparation
Our school division supports St. Anthony's Parish in encouraging students to prepare for the sacraments.
Pre-Kindergarten Program
Lloydminster Catholic School Division's Pre-Kindergarten Program provides three and four year old children the opportunity to enhance their skills by attending a structured in-school program four days a week. The program focuses on structured play activity helping the children to learn through exploration.
Throughout the daily sessions, the children will engage in activities that will increase their faith, social, physical, and academic development. These activities include:
- Structured play
- Gymnasium activities
- Arts and crafts
- Story time
- Snack time
- Center-based activities
